Bradley’s Buddies in the News 9-16-10

This article appeared in the Gloucester County Times on September 16th. To view the complete article click here http://www.nj.com/gloucester-county/towns/index.ssf/2010/09/bradleys_buddies_runwalk_sched.html

Bradley Caraker was a fun-loving, athletic 8-year-old preparing for third-grade classes in Wenonah Elementary School when he was diagnosed with T-Cell leukemia in August 2005. Despite a spirited battle against the disease at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Bradley died at home the following May.

Bill and Eileen Caraker, Bradley’s parents, quickly formed Bradley’s Buddies, a non-profit volunteer organization designed to keep his memory alive by holding fundraisers to aid other children and their families in their fights against leukemia and other cancers.

The organization’s signature event is the Bradley’s Buddies Run/Walk for Leukemia Research. The sixth annual event is slated for Sunday, Sept. 26 at 9 a.m. starting from Bradley’s school. The run/walk attracted more than 600 and raised $20,000 last year. Entry cost is $20 for adults pre-race and $25 race day, and $15 pre-race and $20 race day for others.

The event has raised $60,000 for leukemia research at CHOP to fund the work of Dr. Stephan Grupp, who is attempting to find a cure for childhood leukemia. He has transplanted blood cells from children (including Bradley) with leukemia into mice to replicate and study the cancers. In recent months, Dr. Grupp has been working on T cells to destroy the cancer.

Eighty percent of funds raised are currently designated to support Dr. Grupp’s work. The other 20 percent has gone to assist 15 local families with children struck by cancer.

One such family is that of Xaria Anuzis, a 5-year-old Paulsboro girl diagnosed with leukemia in the spring of 2009. Xaria’s mother, Tammy Pierson, has received financial and emotional support from Bradley’s Buddies.

“Having a child diagnosed with cancer takes a toll on the whole family,” Pierson told Julie Delany, a Caraker family friend who helps publicize the work of Bradley’s Buddies.

“The financial support we received from Bradley’s Buddies has made it easier for me to stay home with Xaria,” said Pierson.

Eileen Caraker has befriended Tammy Pierson and visited Tammy and her daughter.

Says Tammy of Eileen, “She inspires me. It’s inspiring when someone does something just because she cares about others.”

Tammy also has praise for those who participate in the run/walk.

“They don’t realize how much they are truly touching the lives of others. When your child is sick, you want to be strong for your child. Bradley’s Buddies helps give me that strength.”

Bradley’s Buddies also is active in other cancer fund-raisers including the America Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

The organization presents an annual Bradley Caraker Good Sportsmanship Award to two graduating Wenonah sixth graders and two Gateway graduating seniors.

Because Bradley would have graduated from Wenonah’s sixth grade last year, all 31 members of his class shared the award.
